WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Even if you studiously avoid making political comments on social media, experts say they can still figure out your political views by how much you swear or mention God, reports The Independent.

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London studied almost a million tweets from more than 10,000 users in the U.S.

They found that liberals were more likely to use the F-word and the S-word in their non-political posts.

The researchers suggest the expletives are part of “emotionally expressive language” instead of being aggressive or insulting.

Conservatives were more likely to use religious words, including “God” and “psalm.”

“The way people talk and interact on Twitter can provide a more robust and natural source for analyzing behavior than the traditional experiments and surveys,” suggested study co-author Dr. Matthew Purver.

Liberals were more likely to discuss international news in their Tweets, and more likely to emphasize individuality by using the words “I” and “me.”

Conservative tweeters more often described themselves using “we” and “American.”

“This means we could use Twitter data in future to better understand people’s behavior and personality, while also using psychological research to understand more about Twitter users,” Purver explained.

The researchers noted that their study has several limitations because only about 14 percent of adults in the United States use Twitter.

The study was published in PLOS One.
