SEATTLE (CBS Seattle) – Not enough pot shops, fluctuating prices, and evolving regulations…it’s enough to make a recreational marijuana smoker want to grow his or her own.

But the days of planting seeds in a closet may be over, thanks to a startup company called Leaf.

It’s unveiled the “Plug N’ Plant,” a self-contained hydroponic system designed to take the guesswork out of growing weed.

The device is a 4′ by 2′ box  that will fit two plants. The makers promise it will yield 4 to 5 ounces of smokable marijuana, according to TechCrunch.

It will monitor everything that your plants need to grow, including light, ventilation, nutrient levels and soil pH.

If the system senses that anything is out of balance, it will adjust the settings.

Growers will be encouraged to experiment with the settings and share their “recipes” with others.

But the initial cost will be pretty steep. The device starts at $1,499, much more expensive than buckets and potting soil.

But the company promises its machine will pay for itself after just one or two harvests.

Anyone interested can put down a $100 deposit now to reserve a “Plug N’ Plant” when they ship next summer.

But it’s only available for people living in the 23 states and District of Columbia that have legalized some form of medical marijuana.
