DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A trip to the beach turned into a frightening moment for a 14-year-old Volusia County boy.
The teen was surfing with four friends at New Smyrna Beach when he was bit by a 4-5 foot long blacktip shark, Volusia County Beach Safety spokesman Capt. Aaron Jenkins told CNN.
Jenkins described how the shark bit the teen “on the left hand and he punched it away and it only bit him one time.”
The teen paddled back to shore and flagged down a beach safety officer, who helped him with his injuries.
Jenkins explained the teen had suffered “pretty significant lacerations” and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
“He was transported just in case. We don’t know this for certain, but with the nature of the serious lacerations, he may be looking at ligament damage.”
